We undertake a rigorous recruitment process to ensure that mentors have the skills, motivation and commitment to make a positive impact on their mentee. All mentors are also required to undertake background checks, i.e. DBS checks. We usually recruit mentors who satisfy the criteria set out below:
- Be able to attend a 2 day training programme
- Demonstrate a level of intellectual strength
- Able to commit for at least 6months
- Motivated and Resourceful
- Good Listeners
- Willing to motivate the mentee to learn and grow
- Interested in sharing knowledge and experiences
- Not judgemental
- Be empathetic and understanding
- Friendly and approachable

Our training for mentors
Prior to commencing mentoring, all mentors are trained to ensure that they understand their role and are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to support their mentees. Training covers the following topics:
The role of a Mentor
The training offered emphasises the role of a mentor, namely, to provide guidance, encourage their mentee to work hard, develop organisational skills, build ambitions, to listen, discuss blockages to learning and achieving their potential
Personal Development
Mentors are also trained to address the following:
- Resolving negative beliefs
- Confidentiality
- Child Protection
- Equality and Diversity
- Boundaries (mentor/mentee relationships)
- Knowledge, Skills and Attitude of a Mentor
- Effective communication
- Obstacles to effective communication
- Learning styles
- Obstacles to Learning
Session topics
Mentors are trained to plan sessions and to focus on:
- Building a relationship with your mentee
- Session plans
- Action planning
- Target setting
- Exit strategies
